Plevako
(1843 – 1908) – a famous lawyer who acted as a defender in a
number of sensational trials (Kachko, Kostrubo-Koretsky, workers of
the Konshin factory). At the well-known trial of Mother Superior
Mitrofania, accused of fraud, forgery and misappropriation of other
people's property, Plevako acted as a civil plaintiff, exposing the
hypocrisy and criminal inclinations hidden under the monastic robe.
He was considered one of the best Russian orators. Plevako was
elected to the Third State Duma by the Moscow governorate and took
part in the work of several commissions. He belonged to the party of
the Octobrists. [Trotsky, Sochineniya, Vol 4, note 9] |
