Leon
Trotsky: Letter to Joseph Vanzler
July
17, 1940
[Writing
of Leon Trotsky, Vol. 14, New York 1979, p. 864, title: “A
Bed and a Plate Waiting”]
Dear
Friend:
Natalia
and I as well as the whole household were deeply disappointed that
you could not come here. We hope that you will definitely settle your
juridical situation and that your first trip will be to Mexico. You
will find a bed and a plate waiting for you in our house.
We
talked with Comrade Antoinette many times about you and Comrade Edith
and Tyl and we are now a little better acquainted with your family.
You
know possibly that El
Popular, Futuro,
both Lombardo Toledano’s, and La
Voz de Mexico
of the Communist Party have filed suit against me for “defamation”
because I affirmed in the court that they are paid by the GPU.
Juridically the accusation is without substance and they can never
win the case, but I wish to be armed as well as possible. I am
sending you a copy of my letter to Comrade Goldman — possibly you
have in your inexhaustible archives some interesting information.
With
warmest greetings
from
Natalia and myself,
Your
Old Man [Leon Trotsky]
